MONTEGO BAY, St James — CARIBBEAN Producers Jamaica (CPJ) last week awarded $2 million in scholarships to 49 students who are children of employees at the company.

The recipients were selected on the basis of their attaining and maintaining an average of above 74 percent during the last school year at the primary and secondary level, and minimum grade point average of 3.0 at the tertiary level.

It was the 14th consecutive year that the food and beverage distribution company was extending financial support to the children of its employees. A number of students also received schoolbooks during the awards ceremony at the company’s Freeport offices in Montego Bay. Under the initiative, roughly $17 million has so far been distributed.

Addressing the recipients during the ceremony CPJ’s chairman Mark Hart stressed the importance of acquiring a good education.

“If you don’t have the education, you won’t have a good chance in life,” Hart told the recipients.

He also congratulated the students and their parents on their achievement.

Hart later told the Jamaica Observer West that “supporting the employees of CPJ is one of the most important things at the company.”
